How to taper off weed: a plan that isn't a negotiation

Tapering works when it's paperwork and fails when it's vibes. The schedule, the rules, the end date.

Who should taper, and who shouldn't

Tapering suits very heavy users whose past cold-turkey attempts were flattened by withdrawal severity, and people whose next two weeks genuinely can't absorb a brutal stretch. It softens the curve; that's its entire job.

It does not suit serial negotiators. If every past 'cutting back' dissolved into managed smoking with extra steps, the taper format is the problem, because it hands the decision back to you forty times a day. The non-negotiables

  • The schedule is written down before you start. A taper that lives in your head is a mood, not a plan
  • Hard end date, three to four weeks out maximum. Longer tapers don't get easier; they get permanent
  • Amounts are decided in advance and measured, by grams or by sessions per day. 'Less than yesterday' is not a number
  • Never restock above the plan. The supply you start with is the supply
  • A witness has a copy of the schedule. A taper only you know about is a negotiation waiting to happen

A sample three-week shape

Adjust the numbers to your use; keep the shape.

  • Week 1: cut total amount by about a third, and kill the wake-and-bake and any daytime sessions first. Evening-only by the end of the week
  • Week 2: half of your original amount, inside a fixed window (say 8 to 10pm). Outside the window doesn't exist
  • Week 3: a quarter of original, last three days minimal, and the house empties of gear as you go
  • Day 22: day 0. House empty, quit date set on the timeline, the real clock starts

What to expect at each step-down

Every cut produces a two-or-three-day bump of irritability, cravings, and lighter sleep, a small preview of withdrawal that then settles. Expect it, ride it, don't renegotiate the schedule inside it. And know the trade you're making: a taper spreads the discomfort thinner over more weeks, but day 0 still arrives and the first week after it is still real, just softer. The two-strike rule

Blow the same step twice and the taper has told you what you needed to know: this format gives your habit too many votes. That's not failure; it's data, and it's cheap if you act on it. Switch to cold turkey with a prepared week, the guide for which is already written. A blown taper plus a clean hard stop beats a perfect-looking taper that quietly never ends.
